African Geopark & Geoheritage

Celebrating and protecting Africa's extraordinary geological legacy.

Africa is home to some of the world's most significant geological features — from the Great Rift Valley and the ancient cratons of southern Africa to the towering volcanic peaks of Cameroon and the Saharan rock formations of Algeria. The GSAf Geopark & Geoheritage Initiative exists to identify, document, celebrate, and protect this extraordinary heritage.

What is a Geopark?

A geopark is a unified area with geological heritage of international significance, managed holistically with a concept of protection, education, and sustainable development. UNESCO Global Geoparks are supported by local communities.

GSAf works to identify sites across Africa that qualify for national or UNESCO Global Geopark designation and supports the communities that are custodians of these landscapes.
